The book, “The Cheetah Portal” by Bonnie j Nelson was written while on safari in Africa in early 2006. In a series of letters to her boyfriend, Bonnie pursues her vision quest and her spirit awakens and overcomes the harshness of the bush, learning lesson after lesson as Africa claims her for its own.

Upon Bonnie’s return, it takes only three weeks to transcribe and polish the original letters into a manuscript. Her first thought is to publish the book with a selection of the nearly four thousand photos taken on safari by herself and other members of the safari. The book would be used to give as gifts to those who cared enough to make a difference in the lives of thirsty rural villagers and to help preserve the fastest land animal on earth. It is clear from the very beginning that publishers have no interest in publishing a book designed for non profit. The project consumes her and she is urged to let it go for her own peace of mind. Once she lets go, the book takes off in an entirely different direction with the swiftness of the very animal represented in the story.

The book takes a twist and the costly printed version is abandoned for an audio version. In a concept that has been quoted as “ground breaking”, Bonnie is able to fund the project herself and introduce bio-degradable and recycled materials into the production making it planet friendly. She enlists the support and gratitude of the Cheetah Conservation Fund and the Kenya Water Wells Trust for providing them with gifts to their donors. Since the gift is a personal one, the donation is one hundred percent tax deductible and Bonnie is able to take people on a journey to Africa to see and feel and taste and touch as she does the continent that now resides in her heart.
